Tiger Woods & Lee Westwood paired at Open Championship

Three-time Open champion and reigning world number one Tiger Woods has been paired with Englishman Lee Westwood on day one of the 138th Open Championship at Turnberry this Thursday.

Ryo Ishikawa of Japan completes the threesome and they will tee off at 9 AM. The group will surely attract most media attention with keen interest from both sides of the pond. Woods is chasing his 15th major whilst perennial underachiever Westwood has yet to break his duck.

Padraig Harrington begins his pursuit of a third straight Claret Jug at 14:20. The Irishman is partnered by American Jim Furyk and Australian Geoff Ogilvy. Each of the group has won a major - Ogilvy and Furyk are both former US Open winners.

"It's a pointless thing to say I can go out and win it. That wouldn't help me win it. Even though I turn up and it will be three in a row, it's not like I'm winning all three in the one week. I'm just playing one event and I have to treat it like any of the majors I've played. It's not like I haven't tried 100 per cent in every one of them. I can't try any harder." Harrington said.

The course is set to be a tricky test in the manner of great Links courses of the past - though hopefully no repeat of the "Carnasty" of 1999. Could we see more pragmatic iron play a la Birkdale from Tiger? Or will it be the mental strength and rock solid putting of a Harrington?

Other groups to watch are:

  • 07:36 - Greg Norman (Australia), Kenny Perry (USA), Oliver Wilson (England)
  • 12:58 - Ernie Els (South Africa), Lucas Glover (USA), Martin Kaymer (Germany)
  • 13:31 - Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland), Anthony Kim (USA), Retief Goosen (South Africa)
  • 14:09 - Angel Cabrera (Argentina), Paul Casey (England), Ryuji Imada (Japan)
