Day 3 USPGA Championship: Play suspended

Severe weather conditions forced play to be called off at Oakland HIlls today after just 25 of 73 players completed their third round. Over four hours were lost to thunderstorms, who said it was just the British Open that had terrible weather?

Play is set to resume at 7.15 local time (12.15 BST) with the second round following directly on. Final pairing JB Holmes and Charlie Wi are due to tee off at 7.40 and the weather could prove to be a lucky break as the course was playing a little easier than the previous two days. Officials at Oakland HIlls ordered the greens to be watered after a barrage of criticism from players .

Argentinian Andres Romero earlier shot an impressive 65 to reach two over for the tournament and said of the course "The greens were a bit softer, I played an excellent round". Steve Flesch also moved up the leaderboard, the American is one over after five holes. Colombian Camilo Villegas was another big mover as he picked up four shots from fourteen holes to move to two over par.

Reigning Open Champion Padraig Harrington shot two birdies and two bogies to remain at five over. American Boo Weekley gained one shot to go to two over par after four holes, joining a that also includes Sergio Garcia and Aaron Baddeley.

With so much rain on the course, greens will be softer and we could see lower scores on the final day of the championship. The pack is tight anyone within a few shots of the lead has an excellent chance on this monster of a course.

"It's going to be like college again, playing 36 in one day, It happens, and everybody else is going to do it, too, so just have to go out there and deal with it"

"And they've got 12 hours to work on the golf course. It needed the rain." - JB Holmes

Those with long memories will remember the last major winner to play 36 holes was the car park champion of 1979 - Seve Ballesteros. Tiger Woods played 27 on the way to his 2005 Masters title.
