Whalley Golf Club Reviews

1. stay clear

I am posting this review as a new member of a private golf club. From the outset, I did not know what to expect but numerous people told me that a lot of members at Whalley golf club are stuck up and they do believe their own hype. I thought I would find out for myself. The reason I joined this club was due to its location. I joined with 2 other friends and this clubs locality was perfect for us. I initially joined on a trial membership with the option to upgrade. However, I have never felt as uncomfortable on a golf course in all my life. Every time myself and my friends went out on the course other members would confront us and always said something negative towards us. It was like we were being watched all the time. It got that bad we would ask them to leave us alone to finish our round and tell us in the bar later what the issues were. It felt like you were being bullied. The all experience of enjoying your game was spoilt. As if it is not hard enough. A lot of the members up there are well behind the times and the club needs to evolve very quickly. The course itself is very nice and it is set in beautiful surroundings. However, the greens last summer were atrocious and probably the worst I have ever encountered. In all fairness it was a bad summer but I did expect better. If your face doesn’t fit at Whalley I believe you are in for a hard time as some of the members think they own the place and don’t think twice about confronting you aggressively and making you feel uncomfortable. Nevertheless, the professional is an amazing man and he improved my game so much after one lesson and gave me so much confidence. Further, the lady who works’s behind the bar is also a very nice friendly person who makes you fell very welcome. All in all I had a very bad experience as a new member of Whalley golf club. It was not what I was expecting and myself and my 2 friends will be looking somewhere else to play this summer. I wouldn’t recommend it to my worst enemy. Stay clear.

2. disappointed

After spending 12 months at Great Harwood golf club, where I must add the greens were the best I have ever played on, a friend and I decided we would give Whalley golf club a try.

Unfortunately this was a huge mistake on both our parts. The greens at Whalley were like playing on a sand pit. They never really got to a standard I expected and nowhere close to Great Harwoods greens. Furthermore, they were forever flooded and because Whalley is on a slope some of the greens were unplayable. I expected better for the price I was paying. The biggest issue for me at Whalley was when they cut the grass on the fairway they never raked or picked it up. This made the course look scruffy and it was impossible to find your golf balls.

Although there were some nice friendly members at Whalley, there were also far too many committee members waiting for you to do something wrong. At one point things got so bad I thought they were watching from up the trees ! On one occasion when no one was around and it was extremely quiet I messed up a shot and played a couple more balls. Then from nowhere I was pulled up about it. On another occasion when the practice bunker was out of action, whilst out playing on the course I played 5 balls from one of the bunkers. It was no great surprise when the same committee member approached me again. I realize there are rules but if they can’t provide suitable practice areas and when there is no one around to interfere with play then I can’t see what the problem is.

Additionally, the way they approach you ie. With no introduction etc is intimidating to a point where I could say it is bordering on bullying. It was the same person time and time again. I was even refused entry on a golf competition that I had paid for because someone had forgotten to write my name on the completion list. To play I was told I would have to pay again! Unbelievable.

My advice, to Whalley golf club would be to try and move with the times. We are in 2013 now and you are still stuck in the 1900’s. It’s a shame because the course is challenging and it is in a beautiful area. My advice to anyone in the area looking to join Whalley golf club would be to stay clear. You are made to feel unwelcome. They take your membership money from you then just leave you to it. They then approach you aggressively having a go at you for extremely small matters. I would recommend joining Great Harwood. I can honestly say I had no problems on and off the course there and I made a huge mistake in leaving last summer.
