Portal Golf Club (championship course) Reviews

1. Great bacon baps, shame about the course.

Unable to play at my own club a friend and I decided to give the Portal Championship course a go. We played on saturday, March 12th 2011 and paid £32.
Unfortunately our arrival was delayed by traffic and we were unable to have a pre round breakfast as planned. Upon mentioning this to the pro whilst paying the green fee he promised to sort us out with something and sure enough, met us on the first tee with a couple of bacon baps! A great start, but unfortunately thats pretty much all we were impressed with.
The course gets off to a very soft start with two unimpressive and drivable sub 320 yard par 4's, but these are followed by two excellent and challenging par 5's. After that things got a bit dull, becoming a bit of a slog, with just one long straight hole after another. Many of the reviews I'd read previous to our round said that the course was long and tough but very uninteresting and I have to agree that other than the early par 5's, a pretty little par three and a few decent holes towards the end there was nothing particularly memorable about it.
The course is set on a very hilly, but otherwise largely featureless landscape. Fairways are lined with punishing rough, not trees, for the most part, and the views are usually blocked out by the undulations of the course. It's a killer to walk so I would recommend a buggy if you decide to chance it.
In credit to Portal, the course was presented quite well for the time of year, and the greens, despite having clearly been dressed and spiked recently were fast and will be awesome in peak season, with barely a straight putt to be had anywhere.
Overall however, the feeling walking up the last, another long straight hole, was one of overwhelming dissappointment. Apparently this course was voted golf course of the year at some point and regulary features in the top 100 courses, but I'm baffled as to why. If you like long, tough, open, American style courses then you MIGHT like this, but for me it completely lacked charm or character, and I won't play it again.
