Question:

I'm an 18 handicap and have a driver swing speed of 95 and a 5 iron swing speed of 80 MPH. Could you recommend and exercises that will help in increasing my distance? I currently hit my 5 iron 150 yds. and would like to gain as much as 20 yds so as to open my game up.

Answer:

I'm confident you can do that. Look at several aspects of your fitness: Are you flexible enough to swing freely and powerfully? Is your body alignment and symmetry helping or hindering your distance? Do you have adequate functional strength? You'll want to speak with an experienced personal trainer, a physical therapist and or have a look at Paul Chek's "The Golf Biomechanic's Manual" to evaluate and correct and limiting conditions. That said, it's been shown that a well rounded fitness program, including weight lifting increases club head speed and therefore improves drive distance.

You'll find that golf fitness goes well beyond just a couple of selected exercises. And, while doing squats or oblique crunches or one-arm rows may provide some benefit individually, it's the synergy of the exercise combination that elicits the greatest bang for the buck. Think of this as John, Paul, George or Ringo as solo artists versus their cooperative efforts.
