I play off 13, but when I play a mid or short-iron approach I pull it left (right handed). But when I aim right to allow for the pull, it stays straight so I miss the green to the right! Why is this?

Why is it so difficult for me to take my practice swings on the range to the golf course?
One of the flaws in my golf game is my left arm. Invariably when I draw back I break at the elbow and I am sure lose a lot of power and golf technique at that point.
